I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. Not just about DigiByte or DigiDollar, but about how we talk about them. Somewhere along the way, cryptocurrency became a contest to see who could use the biggest words. We throw around terms like blockchain, UTXOs, consensus, oracles, minting, burning, Layer 1, Layer 2, and decentralized finance as if everyone should already know what they mean. Half the time I think we’re trying to impress each other more than we’re trying to educate anyone. Then we scratch our heads and wonder why the rest of the world hasn’t embraced what we’re building.
I have a different test. If I can’t explain DigiByte and DigiDollar to my grandparents while sitting around the kitchen table over a cup of coffee, then maybe I don’t understand them as well as I think I do. Technology shouldn’t require a dictionary before someone can appreciate why it matters. The best ideas are usually the easiest to explain because they’re solving real problems that everyone already understands.
So let’s imagine my grandmother asks me a simple question. “Brian, what exactly is a DigiDollar?” I could launch into an explanation about stablecoins, DigiAssets, collateral, decentralized price feeds, and all the technical pieces that make it work. But the truth is, none of those words mean anything if you don’t first understand the problem they’re trying to solve.
Instead, I’d ask her a question. “Grandma, imagine you own a beautiful family farm. You’ve worked that land for years, and it’s become one of the most valuable things you own. You don’t want to sell it because you believe it will be worth even more someday, and besides, it’s part of your family’s story. But let’s say you need some spending money for a while. Would you sell the farm?” Of course she wouldn’t. Most people don’t sell something valuable if they don’t have to. Instead, they use the value of the farm as collateral. The farm is still theirs. They haven’t given it away. It’s simply helping support something else for a period of time.
That’s actually pretty close to how DigiDollar works.
Now let’s replace the farm with DigiByte. Imagine you’ve been collecting DigiByte for years because you believe in the project. You don’t really want to sell it every time you need to pay a bill, buy groceries, or send money to your grandson. So instead of selling it, you temporarily lock your DigiByte using the built-in rules that everyone on the DigiByte network follows. I like to think of it as putting valuables into a safety deposit box. They’re still yours. Nobody else owns them. You just can’t use them while they’re safely locked away.
Once your DigiByte is locked, the network has one important job to do. It needs to determine what those locked DigiByte are worth today. Instead of asking one company or relying on one website, independent price reporters compare information from many different markets and come to an agreement on a fair value. Think of it like asking ten different banks what today’s exchange rate is instead of trusting one person standing on a street corner. By comparing many sources instead of just one, the system becomes much more trustworthy.
Now comes the part that sounds complicated but really isn’t. Once the network knows the value of your locked DigiByte, it allows you to create DigiDollars. That’s all the word “minting” really means. It simply means creating DigiDollars. Nothing magical happens. No money printer starts running. The network is simply following the same rulebook that everyone else follows. If you’ve locked enough DigiByte, you’re allowed to create a matching amount of DigiDollars based on what your DigiByte is worth at that moment.
Those DigiDollars are designed to be easier to use in everyday life. Maybe you’re paying a contractor. Maybe you’re buying dinner. Maybe you’re sending money to a family member across the country. Instead of worrying that the value of your DigiByte might change between breakfast and dinner, you can use DigiDollars for those everyday transactions while your DigiByte remains safely locked in the background.
When you’re finished using the DigiDollars, you simply return them to the network. They are removed from circulation, and your DigiByte is unlocked and becomes available to you again. You still own it. You didn’t have to sell it. You simply used its value for a period of time and then got it back.
At this point, my grandmother would probably interrupt me. She’d say, “So let me see if I’ve got this straight. You never had to sell your DigiByte. You just locked it away for a while, used DigiDollars instead, and when you were done, you got your DigiByte back?” I’d smile and tell her, “Exactly.” Then she’d probably shake her head and say, “Well, why didn’t you just explain it that way in the first place?”
I think that’s the lesson for all of us. We’ve spent years trying to explain cryptocurrency from the inside out, starting with technology instead of people. Most people don’t wake up wanting to learn about blockchains or cryptography. They wake up wanting to pay their bills, send money to family, save for retirement, or buy groceries. Technology is only interesting when it solves a problem that people already have.
That’s why I believe DigiDollar matters. Not because it’s another cryptocurrency. We already have thousands of those. Not because it’s another stablecoin. The world already has plenty of them. It matters because it shows what the DigiByte network is capable of becoming. Today that means DigiDollar. Tomorrow it could mean digital property deeds, vehicle titles, business contracts, event tickets, loyalty rewards, or countless other assets that people need to own and transfer securely. DigiByte isn’t just becoming a network for moving coins. It’s becoming a network for moving value.
At the end of the day, though, none of that matters if ordinary people can’t understand it. I don’t measure success by whether blockchain developers think DigiDollar is clever. I measure success by whether my grandparents can understand it after one conversation over a cup of coffee. Because if they understand it, there’s a pretty good chance the rest of the world will too. And that’s when real adoption begins.
