The Midwest Beach Deployment

Posted on September 2, 2026August 26, 2026 By UPL Admin

There is something I have noticed at the beach, and once you see it, you cannot unsee it.

Why is it that people who might be from the Midwest, who might see the ocean once every few years, feel the need to purchase every single piece of beach performance wear known to mankind before they go on a trip?

I am not talking about a swimsuit and some sunscreen. That would be normal. I am talking about the full coastal tactical package.

The SPF long-sleeve shirt. The water shoes. The hat with the neck flap. The polarized sunglasses. The backup sunglasses. The waterproof phone pouch. The backup waterproof phone pouch because apparently even the pouch needs a disaster recovery plan. The cooling towel. The beach wagon. The special beach chair. The sand-proof blanket. The rash guard. The Yeti cup. The dry bag. The wet bag. The bag for the bags.

These people are not going to the beach.

They are deploying.

And honestly, I get it.

The Midwest is not really a place. It is a weather survival simulator with corn. These are people who spend half the year preparing for snow, ice, wind, rain, tornadoes, and that one day in April where it is somehow 82 degrees at lunch and sleeting by dinner. They are trained to prepare. They do not trust nature. Nature has betrayed them too many times.

So when they finally get near the ocean, they do not casually walk down to the water like a normal person.

They enter the sand like they are storming Normandy.

The ocean is not their natural environment. Their natural environment is a Target parking lot in 38-degree drizzle. They understand lakes. They understand pontoon boats. They understand standing around a grill while someone says, “Weather’s coming in.”

But the ocean is different.

The ocean has tides. Currents. Salt. Creatures. Sand that gets into places sand has no business being. A sun that feels personal. A wave that can knock the dignity out of a grown man in front of his family.

So they compensate the way all modern Americans compensate.

They buy stuff.

A family from Ohio will show up to Cocoa Beach looking like they are sponsored by REI, Columbia, Bass Pro Shops, and a divorce settlement. Everybody has matching UPF shirts. Dad has a hat that suggests he is either going fishing or leading a jungle expedition. Mom has seven coverups and a tote bag large enough to smuggle a small appliance. The kids are wearing rash guards, water shoes, sunglasses, goggles, and little hats before they even leave the hotel room.

They look less like children and more like a junior search-and-rescue team.

And what do they do after all of that preparation?

They walk ankle-deep into the water, get touched by one piece of seaweed, scream, and go back to the pool.

Which, to be fair, is probably the correct call.

But that is the funny part. The gear is not really about the beach. It is about the idea of the beach. It is about becoming a beach person for four days.

For one week, Dad is no longer the guy from Des Moines scraping ice off his windshield with a Casey’s rewards card. He is Coastal Adventure Dad. He owns sandals with arch support now. He says things like, “We need to hydrate,” while holding a stainless-steel cup large enough to be used as a defensive weapon.

Mom is not just on vacation. She has a system. She knows which bag has the sunscreen, which bag has the snacks, which bag has the towels, and which bag nobody is allowed to touch because it contains “important stuff.” Nobody knows what the important stuff is, but everyone knows not to touch that bag.

And the beach dad? He has done research. He read reviews. He knows which wagon folds correctly. He knows which umbrella anchor works in wind. He knows the difference between water resistant and waterproof, and he will tell you whether you asked or not.

It is ridiculous.

But it is also kind of sweet.

Because buried under all that performance fabric is just a person trying to do vacation right. They do not get the ocean all the time. This is not normal life for them. This is the big trip. This is the thing they talked about all winter while shoveling the driveway and wondering why they still live somewhere that hurts their face.

They do not want to be uncomfortable. They do not want the kids whining. They do not want to forget sunscreen and spend the rest of the trip looking like a boiled lobster with regret. They do not want to miss the moment.

They want the beach to be magical.

They just happen to approach magic with a Costco cart and a packing checklist.

And honestly, maybe that is the most American thing ever.

We do not just go somewhere.

We accessorize the dream first.

To end our trip last Saturday we had drinks at the Golden Gai, then dinner at The Mayfair Supper Club. A fitting end to a very special weekend with my very special lady. Happy Birthday Brandi.

Friday evening dinner at Giada... Excellent food and service. White people in a driving shopping cart. Absinthe. Great show. Not for everyone.

Checking into the Vanderpump in Vegas on Friday. Not sure I would go back. Staff was great... Hotel... Not so much. I wouldn`t recommend it other than the location.
